Exercise 3, § 2

Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, II, 181

Let XX be a set with a total ordering. Show that there exists a Hall set relative to XX such that H∩M3(X)H \cap M^3(X) consists of the products z(yx)z(yx) with y<xy < x, y⩽zy \leqslant z and that H∩M4(X)H \cap M^4(X) consists of the products w(z(yx))w(z(yx)) with w⩾z⩾yw \geqslant z \geqslant y, y<xy < x and the products (ab)(cd)(ab)(cd) with a<b,c<da < b, c < d and either a<ca < c or a=ca = c and b<db < d.
