Exercise 10, § 4

Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, II, 190

Let x,yx, y be in GG and let r,sr, s be two integers ≥1\geq 1. Suppose that (xr,ys)=e(x^r, y^s) = e. (a) Show that, for all n≥1n \geq 1, (x,y)(rs)n∈Cn+2G(x, y)^{(rs)^n} \in C^{n+2} G. (It can be assumed that GG is generated by {x,y}\{x, y\}; then apply Exercise 9 (b), noting that (xr,ys)≡(x,y)rs(x^r, y^s) \equiv (x, y)^{rs} mod. C3GC^3 G.) (b) Suppose that xr=ys=ex^r = y^s = e; let tt denote the g.c.d. of rr and ss. Show that (x,y)t∈C3G(x, y)^t \in C^3 G and deduce that (x,y)tn∈Cn+2G(x, y)^{tn} \in C^{n+2} G for all n≥1n \geq 1 (same method).
