Exercise 12, § 4

Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, II, 190

Suppose that GG is nilpotent. Let HH be a subgroup of GG and let mm be an integer ≥1\geq 1 and let x,yx, y be elements of GG such that xm∈Hx^m \in H and ym∈Hy^m \in H. Show that there exists an integer N≥0N \geq 0 such that (xy)mN∈H(xy)^{m^N} \in H. (Apply Exercise 11 to the group generated by {x,y}\{x, y\} and its intersection with HH.)
