(a) Let FF be a free group with basic family {xˉ,yˉ}\{\bar{x}, \bar{y}\} of two elements, let cc be an integer ≥2\geq 2 and let mm be an integer ≥1\geq 1. We write Fc=F/CcFF^c = F/C^c F and denote by x,yx, y the images of xˉ,yˉ\bar{x}, \bar{y} in FcF^c. Let FmcF_m^c be the subgroup of FcF^c generated by {xm,y}\{x^m, y\}. Show that there exists an integer N≥0N \geq 0 such that zmN∈Fmcz^{m^N} \in F_m^c for all z∈Fcz \in F^c (use Exercise 11). (b) Let IcI^c (resp. ImcI_m^c) be the normal subgroup of FcF^c (resp. FmcF_m^c) generated by yy. Show that, if NN is chosen as above and z∈Icz \in I^c, then zmN∈Imcz^{m^N} \in I_m^c (note that Fc/IcF^c/I^c is an infinite cyclic group with generator the image of xx and deduce that Fmc/Imc→Fc/IcF_m^c/I_m^c \to F^c/I^c is injective and hence that Imc=Fmc∩IcI_m^c = F_m^c \cap I^c). In particular xymNx−1∈Imcxy^{m^N} x^{-1} \in I_m^c. (c) Suppose that GG is nilpotent. Let HH be a subgroup of GG and let LL be a normal subgroup of HH. Let g∈Gg \in G and let m≥1m \geq 1 be such that gm∈Hg^m \in H. Show that, if NN is sufficiently large, glmNg−1∈Lg l^{m^N} g^{-1} \in L for all l∈Ll \in L. (If GG is of class <c< c, choose NN as in (a) and use the homomorphism f:Fc→Gf : F^c \to G such that f(x)=g,f(y)=lf(x) = g, f(y) = l; note that f(Fmc)⊂H,f(Imc)⊂Lf(F_m^c) \subset H, f(I_m^c) \subset L and apply (b) above.)
