Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, II, 193

The upper central series (ZiGZ_iG) of the group GG is defined inductively as follows: (i) ZiG={e}Z_iG = \{e\} if i⩽0i \leqslant 0; (ii) ZiG/Zi−1GZ_iG/Z_{i-1}G is the centre of G/Zi−1GG/Z_{i-1}G. Then {e}=Z0G⊂Z1G⊂⋯\{e\} = Z_0G \subset Z_1G \subset \cdots and Z1GZ_1G is the centre of GG; the ZiGZ_iG are characteristic subgroups of GG. (a) Show that GG is nilpotent of class ≤c\leq c if and only if G=ZcGG = Z_cG. (b) Show that (CnG,ZmG)⊂Zm−nG(C^nG, Z_mG) \subset Z_{m-n}G. (c) Suppose that GG is nilpotent and PP-torsion-free (where PP is a set of prime numbers, cf. Exercise 14). Show that the ZiGZ_iG are PP-saturated. (It suffices to verify this for Z1GZ_1G; if nn is a PP-integer and g∈Gg \in G is such that gn∈Z1Gg^n \in Z_1G, then xgx−1=gnxgx^{-1} = g^n for all x∈Gx \in G, whence xgx−1=gxgx^{-1} = g by Exercise 14 (c) and it follows that gg belongs to Z1GZ_1G.)
