Let (Gα)(G_\alpha) be a real filtration on a group G and let vv be the corresponding order function. Let H be a subgroup of G.

(a) Let Hα=H∩GαH_\alpha = H \cap G_\alpha. Show that (Hα)(H_\alpha) is a real filtration of H and that the corresponding order function is the restriction of vv to H. Hα+=H∩Gα+H_\alpha^+ = H \cap G_\alpha^+ and gr(H)gr(H) is identified with a graded subgroup of gr(G)gr(G).

(b) Suppose that H is normal and that v(G)∩Rv(G) \cap \mathbf{R} is a discrete subset of R\mathbf{R}. We write (G/H)α=(GαH)/H(G/H)_\alpha = (G_\alpha H)/H. Show that ((G/H)α)((G/H)_\alpha) is a real filtration of G/HG/H and that the corresponding order function vG/Hv_{G/H} is given by the formula

vG/H(x)=Sup⁡y∈xv(y). v_{G/H}(x) = \operatorname{Sup}_{y \in x} v(y).
Show that, for all α∈R\alpha \in \mathbf{R}, there is an exact sequence
0→grα(H)→grα(G)→grα(G/H)→0. 0 \to gr_\alpha(H) \to gr_\alpha(G) \to gr_\alpha(G/H) \to 0.

(c) With the hypotheses of (b), suppose that (Gα)(G_\alpha) is a central filtration. Show that so are the filtrations on HH and G/HG/H induced by (Gα)(G_\alpha) and that the Lie algebra gr⁡(G/H)\operatorname{gr}(G/H) is identified with the quotient of gr⁡(G)\operatorname{gr}(G) by the ideal gr⁡(H)\operatorname{gr}(H).
