Exercise 4, § 4

Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, II, 188

Let HH be a nilpotent group of class cc and let GG be the group of automorphisms of HH which act trivially on H/(H,H)H/(H, H). Show that GG is nilpotent of class ≤c−1\leq c - 1. (Apply Exercise 3 to the lower central series of HH and note that GG operates trivially on gr⁡(H)\operatorname{gr}(H).) Show that, if HH is a finite pp-group (pp prime), so is GG (same method).
