Exercise 5, § 4

Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, II, 188

Let KK be a commutative field and let LL be a finite Galois extension of KK with Galois group GG. Let vLv_L be a valuation of LL with values in Z\mathbf{Z} (Commutative Algebra, Chapter VI, § 3, no. 2) which is invariant under GG. If g∈Gg \in G, we write

v(g)=sup⁡x∈L×vL(g(x)−xx). v(g) = \sup_{x \in L^\times} v_L\left(\frac{g(x) - x}{x}\right).
Show that vv is the order function of a separated integral filtration (Gn)(G_n) on GG such that G0=GG_0 = G and that the restriction of this filtration to G1G_1 is central (apply Exercise 3, taking HH to be the ideal of vLv_L). Show that G1G_1 is a pp-group (resp. reduces to the identity element) if the residue field of LL is of characteristic p>0p > 0 (resp. of characteristic zero); when the fields LL and KK have the same residue field, G1G_1 is the kernel of the homomorphism ϕ\phi defined in Commutative Algebra, Chapter VI, § 8, Exercise 11 (b).
