Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let K[G]K[G] be the algebra of GG over KK and let II be the kernel of the canonical homomorphism K[G]→KK[G] \to K ("augmentation ideal"). Then

K[G] = K ⊕ I and I admits as basis the family of g−1g - 1 where g∈G−{e}g \in G - \{e\}.

(a) If nn is an integer ⩾0\geqslant 0, we denote by InI^n the ideal of K[G]K[G] the nn-th power of II. Let GnG_n be the set of g∈Gg \in G such that g−1∈Ing - 1 \in I^n. Show that (Gn)(G_n) is an integral central filtration on GG. In particular, Gn⊃CnGG_n \supset C^n G for all nn.

(b) Show that if K=ZK = \mathbf{Z} the mapping g↦g−1g \mapsto g - 1 defines on taking quotients an isomorphism of G/(G,G)G/(G, G) onto I/I2I/I^2. Deduce that G2=C2GG_2 = C^2 G.†

(c) Suppose that KK is a field of characteristic zero and that GG is finite. Show that In=II^n = I for all n⩾1n \geqslant 1.

(d) Suppose that KK is a field of characteristic p>0p > 0 and that GG is a pp-group. Show that In{0}I^n\{0\} for nn sufficiently large. (Show first, using Algebra, Chapter I, § 6, no. 5, Proposition 11, that every simple K[G]K[G]-module is isomorphic to KK; deduce that II is the radical of K[G]K[G] and hence is nilpotent since K[G]K[G] is of finite rank over KK.)

(e) Suppose that K=ZK = \mathbf{Z} and that GG has the following property: for all g∈Gg \in G such that g≠1g \neq 1, there exists a prime number pp, a pp-group PP and a homomorphism f:G→Pf : G \to P such that f(g)≠ef(g) \neq e. Show that in that case ⋂nIn={0}\bigcap_n I^n = \{0\}. (Reduce it immediately to the case where G=PG = P. By applying (d) to the field Fp\mathbf{F}_p, we see that there exists mm such that Im⊂p⋅Z[G]I^m \subset p \cdot \mathbf{Z}[G] and, as II is a direct factor in Z[G]\mathbf{Z}[G], this implies that Im⊂pII^m \subset pI, whence ⋂nImn⊂⋂npnI\bigcap_n I^{mn} \subset \bigcap_n p^n I, which reduces to 0 since II is a finitely generated Abelian group.)
