Exercise 8, § 4

Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, II, 189

Let G=SL2(Z)G = \mathbf{SL}_2(\mathbf{Z}) and let x=(1101),y=(1011),w=(01−10)x = \begin{pmatrix} 1 & 1 \\ 0 & 1 \end{pmatrix}, y = \begin{pmatrix} 1 & 0 \\ 1 & 1 \end{pmatrix}, w = \begin{pmatrix} 0 & 1 \\ -1 & 0 \end{pmatrix}.

(a) Verify the formulae w4=1,w=xy−1x,wxw−1=y−1w^4 = 1, w = xy^{-1}x, wxw^{-1} = y^{-1}.

(b) If g=(abcd)g = \begin{pmatrix} a & b \\ c & d \end{pmatrix} is an element of GG, we write l(g)=∣a∣+∣b∣l(g) = |a| + |b|. Show that l(g)=1l(g) = 1 if and only if gg is of the form ynway^n w^a, where n∈Zn \in \mathbf{Z} and 0⩽a⩽30 \leqslant a \leqslant 3. If l(g)⩾2l(g) \geqslant 2, show that there exists a power hh of xx or yy such that l(gh)<l(g)l(gh) < l(g). Deduce that GG is generated by {x,y}\{x, y\}.

(c) Using (a) and (b), show that G/(G,G)G/(G, G) is generated by the image ξ\xi of xx and that ξ12=e\xi^{12} = e.‡ Deduce that CnG=(G,G)C^n G = (G, G) for n⩾2n \geqslant 2. (apply Exercise 7).
