Exercise 10, § 5

Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, II, 199

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let pp be a prime number and let G be a group with a real central filtration (Gα)(G_\alpha). Suppose that the relation x∈Gαx \in G_\alpha implies xp∈Gpαx^p \in G_{p\alpha}, in which case the filtration (Gα)(G_\alpha) is called restricted. (a) Show that the Lie algebra gr(G)\mathrm{gr}(G) associated with (Gα)(G_\alpha) is such that p⋅gr(G)=0p \cdot \mathrm{gr}(G) = 0 and hence can be given an algebra structure over Fp\mathbf{F}_p. (b) Let ξ∈grα(G)\xi \in \mathrm{gr}_\alpha(G) and let xx be a representative of ξ\xi in GαG_\alpha. Show that the image of xpx^p in grpα(G)\mathrm{gr}_{p\alpha}(G) does not depend on the choice of xx (use Exercise 9 (c)). If this image is denoted by ξ[p]\xi^{[p]}, prove that ξ↦ξ[p]\xi \mapsto \xi^{[p]} is a linear mapping of grα(G)\mathrm{gr}_\alpha(G) into grpα(G)\mathrm{gr}_{p\alpha}(G) and that (ξ+ξ′)[p]=ξ[p]+ξ′[p]+Δp(ξ,ξ′)(\xi + \xi')^{[p]} = \xi^{[p]} + {\xi'}^{[p]} + \Delta_p(\xi, \xi'). (Same method.)

Show that, if ξ∈grα(G)\xi \in \mathrm{gr}_\alpha(G) and η∈grβ(G)\eta \in \mathrm{gr}_\beta(G), then

[ξ[p],η]=(ad ξ)p(η). [\xi^{[p]}, \eta] = (\mathrm{ad}\ \xi)^p(\eta).
(Use Exercise 9 (d).)

(c) Show that there exists one and only one pp-mapping of gr(G)\mathrm{gr}(G) into itself (Chapter I, § 1, Exercise 20) which extends the mappings ξ↦ξ[p]\xi \mapsto \xi^{[p]} defined on the grα(G)\mathrm{gr}_\alpha(G). With this structure, gr(G)\mathrm{gr}(G) is a Lie pp-algebra, said to be associated with the restricted filtration (Gα)(G_\alpha).
