Let gg be a Lie algebra over a field kk of characteristic p>0p > 0. (a) Let hh be an integer ≤p−1\leq p - 1. gg is said to satisfy Engel's h-th condition if (ad x)h(y)=0(\mathrm{ad}\ x)^h(y) = 0 for every ordered pair (x,y)(x, y) of elements of gg. Show that this is equivalent to

∑σ∈Shad(xσ(1))∘⋯∘ad(xσ(h))=0 \sum_{\sigma \in S_h} \mathrm{ad}(x_{\sigma(1)}) \circ \cdots \circ \mathrm{ad}(x_{\sigma(h)}) = 0
for x1,…,xhx_1, \ldots, x_h in gg (apply the formula (ad x)h=0(\mathrm{ad}\ x)^h = 0 to the linear combinations of the xix_i).

(b) Let x,yx, y be elements of gg such that Λp(ax,by)=0\Lambda_p(ax, by) = 0 for all a,ba, b in kk. Show that, if Λpr,s\Lambda_p^{r,s} is the bihomogeneous component of Λp\Lambda_p of bidegree (r,s)(r, s), then Λpr,s(x,y)=0\Lambda_p^{r,s}(x, y) = 0 for every ordered pair (r,s)(r, s). Deduce (taking r=p−1,s=1r = p - 1, s = 1) that (ad x)p−1(y)=0(\mathrm{ad}\, x)^{p-1}(y) = 0. In particular, if Λp(x,y)=0\Lambda_p(x, y) = 0 for x,yx, y in gg, the Lie algebra gg satisfies Engel’s (p−1)(p-1)-th condition.

(c) Let cc be the centre of gg. Suppose that (ad x)p=0(\mathrm{ad}\, x)^p = 0 for all x∈gx \in g. Show that g/cg/c satisfies Engel’s (p−1)(p-1)-th condition. (Show that Λp(ad x,ad y)=0\Lambda_p(\mathrm{ad}\, x, \mathrm{ad}\, y) = 0 for x,yx, y in gg and apply (b) to the Lie algebra ad g=g/c\mathrm{ad}\, g = g/c.)

(d) Let GG be a group such that xp=1x^p = 1 for all x∈Gx \in G and let (Gα)(G_\alpha) be a real central filtration of GG. The filtration (Gα)(G_\alpha) is restricted (Exercise 10) and gr(G)\mathrm{gr}(G) is a Lie pp-algebra whose pp-mapping is zero. Deduce that gr(G)\mathrm{gr}(G) satisfies Engel’s (p−1)(p-1)-th condition.\footnote{For properties of Lie algebras satisfying an Engel condition and their applications to the “restricted Burnside problem”, see A. Kostrikin, Izv. Akad. Nauk SSSR, 23 (1959), pp. 3–34.}
