Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, III, 373

(a) Let q be a quadratic form of signature (1, 2) on R3\mathbf{R}^3. Let P be the set of m∈R3m \in \mathbf{R}^3 such that q(m)>0q(m) > 0. Then P is the union of two disjoint convex cones C and −C-C. If s∈SO(q)s \in \mathbf{SO}(q), then either s(C)=Cs(C) = C and s(−C)=−Cs(-C) = -C or s(C)=−Cs(C) = -C and s(−C)=Cs(-C) = C. Let SO+(q)\mathbf{SO}^+(q) be the set of s∈SO(q)s \in \mathbf{SO}(q) such that s(C)=Cs(C) = C. Then SO+(q)\mathbf{SO}^+(q) is an open normal subgroup of SO(q)\mathbf{SO}(q) of index 2 in SO(q)\mathbf{SO}(q). (b) By imitating the method of Exercise 3, define a morphism of SL(2,R)\mathbf{SL}(2, \mathbf{R}) onto SO+(q)\mathbf{SO}^+(q) with kernel {I,−I}\{I, -I\}. Deduce that the real Lie group SO+(q)\mathbf{SO}^+(q) is isomorphic to the real Lie group SL(2,R)/{I,−I}\mathbf{SL}(2, \mathbf{R})/\{I, -I\}.

(c) For (ξ,η)∈C2(\xi, \eta) \in \mathbf{C}^2 and (ξ′,η′)∈C2(\xi', \eta') \in \mathbf{C}^2, let f((ξ,η),(ξ′,η′))=ξξ′‾−ηη′‾f((\xi, \eta), (\xi', \eta')) = \xi \overline{\xi'} - \eta \overline{\eta'}. Show that the inner automorphism of SL(2,C)\mathbf{SL}(2, \mathbf{C}) defined by 12(1−i−i1)\frac{1}{\sqrt{2}} \begin{pmatrix} 1 & -i \\ -i & 1 \end{pmatrix} maps SU(f)\mathbf{SU}(f) to SL(2,R)\mathbf{SL}(2, \mathbf{R}).
