(a) Let G be the set of quaternions of norm 1. This is a Lie subgroup of the real Lie group H∗\mathbf{H}^*, homeomorphic to S3\mathbf{S}_3 and hence simply connected, cf. General Topology, Chapter XI.

(b) Let E be the real vector space of pure quaternions, identified with R3\mathbf{R}^3 by

(x,y,z)↦xi+yj+zk. (x, y, z) \mapsto xi + yj + zk.
For all g∈Gg \in G, we define an automorphism φ(g)\varphi(g) of E by φ(g)q=gqg−1\varphi(g)q = gqg^{-1}. Show that φ\varphi is a morphism of the Lie group G onto the real Lie group SO(3,R)\mathbf{SO}(3, \mathbf{R}) with kernel {1,−1}\{1, -1\}. Deduce that the Lie group SO(3,R)\mathbf{SO}(3, \mathbf{R}) is isomorphic to the Lie group G/{1,−1}G/\{1, -1\}.

(c) Let C\mathbf{C} be identified with the subfield R+Ri\mathbf{R} + \mathbf{R}i of H\mathbf{H}. The mapping (λ,q)↦qλ(\lambda, q) \mapsto q\lambda of C×H\mathbf{C} \times \mathbf{H} into H\mathbf{H} makes H\mathbf{H} into a vector space over C\mathbf{C} which is identified with C2\mathbf{C}^2 by the choice of basis (1,j)(1, j). For all g∈Gg \in G, let σ(g)\sigma(g) be the automorphism of this vector space defined by σ(g)q=gq\sigma(g)q = gq. Show that σ\sigma is an isomorphism of the real Lie group GG onto the real Lie group SU(2,C)\mathbf{SU}(2, \mathbf{C}). The latter is therefore simply connected by (a).

(d) For (q1,q2)∈G×G(q_1, q_2) \in G \times G, let τ(q1,q2)\tau(q_1, q_2) be the mapping q↦q1qq2q \mapsto q_1qq_2 of H=R4\mathbf{H} = \mathbf{R}^4 into itself. Show that τ\tau is a morphism of the real Lie group G×GG \times G onto the real Lie group SO(4,R)\mathbf{SO}(4, \mathbf{R}) with kernel N={(1,1),(−1,−1)}N = \{(1, 1), (-1, -1)\} and hence that SO(4,R)\mathbf{SO}(4, \mathbf{R}) is isomorphic to (G×G)/N(G \times G)/N.
