Let GG be a finite-dimensional connected real Lie group and MM a finite-dimensional connected manifold of class C∞C^\infty; let there be given a law of right operation of class C∞C^\infty of GG on MM. For all x∈Mx \in M, let ρ(x)\rho(x) be the corresponding orbital mapping.

(a) For GG to operate transitively on MM, it is necessary and sufficient that, for all x∈Mx \in M, the mapping Te(ρ(x))T_e(\rho(x)) of L(G)L(G) into Tx(M)T_x(M) be surjective. (To see that the condition is sufficient, observe that then every GG-orbit in MM is open.)

(b) Suppose that GG operates transitively on MM. We identify MM with a homogeneous space H∣GH|G, where HH is the stabilizer of a point x0x_0 of MM. The action of GG on MM is called imprimitive if there exists a closed submanifold VV of MM of class C∞C^\infty such that 0<dim⁡V<dim⁡M0 < \dim V < \dim M and for which every transform VsV_s (where s∈Gs \in G) is either equal to VV or disjoint from VV. For this to be so, it is necessary and sufficient that there exist a Lie subgroup LL of GG such that H⊂L⊂GH \subset L \subset G and dim⁡(H)<dim⁡(L)<dim⁡(G)\dim(H) < \dim(L) < \dim(G). If this is not so, the action of GG on MM is called primitive; for this it suffices that there exist no subalgebra of L(G)L(G) lying between L(G)L(G) and L(H)L(H) and distinct from L(G)L(G) and L(H)L(H).

(c) Under the hypothesis of (b), let L\mathscr{L} be the image of L(G)L(G) under the law of infinitesimal operation associated with the action of GG. Let E\mathscr{E} be the algebra of functions of class C∞C^\infty on MM and m\mathfrak{m} the maximal ideal of E\mathscr{E} consisting of the functions in E\mathscr{E} which are zero at x0x_0; we denote by Lp\mathscr{L}_p for p=−1,0,1,2,…p = -1, 0, 1, 2, \ldots the set of x∈Lx \in \mathscr{L} such that θ(X)f∈mp+1\theta(X)f \in \mathfrak{m}^{p+1} for all f∈Ef \in \mathscr{E}; then L−1=L\mathscr{L}_{-1} = \mathscr{L} and L0\mathscr{L}_0 is the image of L(H)L(H) under the law of infinitesimal operation. If (U,ϕ,Rn)(U, \phi, \mathbf{R}^n) is a chart of MM centered on x0x_0 and X1,…,XnX_1, \ldots, X_n are the vector fields on UU defined by the chart, the elements of Lp\mathscr{L}_p are the a1X1+⋯+anXna_1X_1 + \cdots + a_nX_n with a1,…,ana_1, \ldots, a_n in mp∣U\mathfrak{m}^p|U. Show that [Lp,Lq]⊂Lp+q[\mathscr{L}_p, \mathscr{L}_q] \subset \mathscr{L}_{p+q} (with the convention L−2=L\mathscr{L}_{-2} = \mathscr{L}). If there exists Y∈LpY \in \mathscr{L}_p (for p≥0p \geq 0) such that Y∉Lp+1Y \notin \mathscr{L}_{p+1}, there exists x∈Lx \in L such that [Y,X]∉Lp[Y, X] \notin \mathscr{L}_p. The Lp\mathscr{L}_p are Lie subalgebras of L\mathscr{L}. For p≥0p \geq 0, Lp\mathscr{L}_p is an ideal of L0\mathscr{L}_0. Let ρ\rho be the canonical linear representation of HH on Tx0(M)T_{x_0}(M). The Lie algebra of H/(Kerρ)H/(Ker \rho) is isomorphic to L0/L1\mathscr{L}_0/\mathscr{L}_1.

(d) Suppose further that the intersection of the Lp\mathscr{L}_p is {0}\{0\}. Then there exists a greatest index rr such that Lr≠{0}\mathscr{L}_r \neq \{0\} and all the Lj\mathscr{L}_j of indices ≤r\leq r are distinct. For p≥0p \geq 0,

dim⁡(Lp/Lp+1)≤(n+pp+1). \dim(\mathscr{L}_p/\mathscr{L}_{p+1}) \leq \binom{n+p}{p+1}.
(e) The hypothesis of (d) is satisfied if M is analytic and G operates analytically on M.
