(a) For x,y in S2n−1⊂Cn, we define α(x,y)∈(0,π) by
cosα(x,y)=ℜ((x∣y)).
For s, t in U(n), we write d(s,t)=supx∈S2n−1α(sx,tx). Show that d is a left and right invariant distance on U(n).
(b) Let s∈U(n). Let θ1,…,θm be the numbers in ]−π,π] such that the eiθj are the distinct eigenvalues of s. Let θ(s)=sup1≤j≤m∣θj∣. Then d(e,s)=θ(s). (Let Vj be the eigenspace of s corresponding to eiθj. For x∈S2n−1, find a lower bound to ℜ((x∣sx)) by decomposing with respect to the Vj.)
(c) Let s, t be in U(n) be such that θ(t)<2π and s commutes with (s, t). Then s and t commute. (In the notation of (b), let Vj′ be the orthogonal supplement of Vj and Wj=t(Vj); show that Wj=(Wj∩Vj)+(Wj∩Vj′) and then that Wj∩Vj′={0}.)
(d) Show that there exists a compact neighbourhood V of e in U(n) which has the property of Exercise 10, which is stable under inner automorphisms of U(n) and which is such that if x,y are non-permutable elements of V then x and (x,y) are not permutable. (Use (c).)
(e) Let β be the normalized Haar measure of U(n). Let V1 be a symmetric compact neighbourhood of e in U(n) such that V12⊂V. Let p be an integer such that β(V1)>1/p. Show that, for every finite subgroup F of GL(n,C), there exists a commutative normal subgroup A of F such that Card(F/A)≤p (Jordan’s theorem). (Reduce it to the case where F⊂U(n). Take A to be the subgroup of F generated by F∩V and use (d).)
