Let GG be a finite-dimensional Lie group, gg its Lie algebra, g∗g^* the dual vector space of gg, σ\sigma the adjoint representation of GG on gg and ρ\rho the representation of GG on g∗g^* defined by ρ(g)=tσ(g)−1\rho(g) = {}^t \sigma(g)^{-1} for all g∈Gg \in G.

(a) L(ρ)(x)=−t(ad x)L(\rho)(x) = -{}^t(\mathrm{ad}\ x) for all x∈gx \in g.

(b) Let f∈g∗f \in g^*. Let GfG_f denote the stabilizer of ff in GG; it is a Lie subgroup of GG and gf=L(Gf)g_f = L(G_f) is the set of x∈Gx \in G such that t(ad x)f=0{}^t(\mathrm{ad}\ x)f = 0.

(c) For x, yx,\ y in gg, we write Bf(x,y)=f([x,y])B_f(x, y) = f([x, y]). Show that BfB_f is an alternating bilinear form on gg, that the mapping sfs_f of gg into g∗g^* left associated with BfB_f is the mapping x↦t(ad x)fx \mapsto {}^t(\mathrm{ad}\ x)f and that the orthogonal of gg with respect to BfB_f is gfg_f. Let βf\beta_f denote the non-degenerate alternating bilinear form on g/gfg/g_f (which is therefore of even dimension) derived from BfB_f when passing to the quotient. We denote by βf′\beta_f' the inverse form of BfB_f on (g/gf)∗(g/g_f)^*.

(d) Let Ω\Omega denote an orbit of GG on g∗g^*; we give it the manifold structure derived from that on G/GfG/G_f by transport of structure, where ff is an arbitrary point of Ω\Omega. Then GG operates analytically on Ω\Omega on the left. Let DD be the associated law of infinitesimal operation. For all a∈ga \in g and all f∈Ωf \in \Omega,

Da(f)=−(tad a) f. D_a(f) = -({}^t \mathrm{ad}\ a)\ f.

The tangent subspace Tf(Ω)T_f(\Omega) is the image of sfs_f, that is the orthogonal of gfg_f in g∗g^*, and is canonically identified with (g/gf)∗(g/g_f)^*, so that sfs_f defines a canonical isomorphism rfr_f of Tf(Ω)T_f(\Omega) onto its dual. The field f↦βf′f \mapsto \beta_f' is an analytic differential form ω\omega of degree 2 on Ω\Omega, which is invariant under GG. For f∈Ω, a∈g, b∈g, ω(Da(f),Db(f))=f([a,b])f \in \Omega,\ a \in g,\ b \in g,\ \omega(D_a(f), D_b(f)) = f([a, b]).

(e) Show that dω=0d\omega = 0.

(f) If α\alpha is a differential form of degree 1 on Ω\Omega, the isomorphisms rfr_f allow us to identify α\alpha with a vector field. Let AA be the set of analytic functions on Ω\Omega with values in KK. For ϕ,ψ\phi, \psi in AA, we write [ϕ,ψ]=ω(dϕ,dψ)∈A[\phi, \psi] = \omega(d\phi, d\psi) \in A. Show that AA has thus a Lie algebra structure.

(g) For all a∈ga \in g, let ψa\psi_a be the function f↦f(a)f \mapsto f(a) on Ω\Omega. Show that a↦ψaa \mapsto \psi_a is a homomorphism of gg into the Lie algebra AA and that the form dψad\psi_a is identified, by means of the isomorphisms rfr_f, with the vector field DaD_a.

(h) Let UU be an open subset of g∗g^* and ϕ\phi an analytic function on UU. For all f∈Uf \in U, the differential dfϕd_f \phi of ϕ\phi at ff is identified with an element of gg. Suppose that Xϕ=0X\phi = 0 for every vector field XX defined by the action of GG on g∗g^*. Show that then, for all f∈Uf \in U, dfϕd_f \phi belongs to the centre of gfg_f.

(i) For all f∈g∗f \in g^*, we write rf=dim⁡gfr_f = \dim g_f. Let r=inf⁡f∈g∗rfr = \inf_{f \in g^*} r_f. Show that the set VV of f∈g∗f \in g^* such that rf=rr_f = r is open and dense in g∗g^*. Show that, for all f∈Vf \in V, gfg_f is commutative. (Construct rr functions ϕ\phi satisfying the conditions of (h) in a neighbourhood of ff and such that their differentials at ff are linearly independent.)
