Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, III, 379

Let GG be a finite-dimensional Lie group. Suppose that L(G)L(G) is simple. Let AA be a normal subgroup of GG. If AA is not open, AA is discrete and its centralizer in GG is open. (Let aa be the subalgebra tangent to AA at ee. Show that a={0}a = \{0\}. Let xx be an element of AA not belonging to the centre of GG. Consider the mapping y↦yxy−1y \mapsto yxy^{-1} of GG into AA. Deduce from the relation a={0}a = \{0\} that the centralizer of xx in GG is open. Then, using an exponential mapping, show that the centralizer of xx in GG contains a neighbourhood of ee independent of xx.
