Suppose that K=RK = \mathbf{R}. Let rr be an integer ≥1\geq 1 or ∞\infty. A group of class CrC^r is a set GG with a group structure and a manifold structure of class CrC^r such that the mapping (x,y)↦xy−1(x, y) \mapsto xy^{-1} of G×GG \times G into GG is of class CrC^r.

(a) Suppose henceforth that r≥2r \geq 2. A neighbourhood of ee in GG is identified with a neighbourhood of 00 in a Banach space. Let xy=P(x,y)xy = P(x, y), where PP is a mapping of class C2C^2 on an open neighbourhood of (0,0)(0, 0). Let

(D1D2P)(0,0)=B. (D_1 D_2 P)(0, 0) = B.

Show that

xy=x+y+B(x,y)+∣x∣∣y∣o(1) xy = x + y + B(x, y) + |x||y|o(1)

as (x,y)→(0,0)(x, y) \to (0, 0). (Use an expansion of P of order 2 with integral remainder.) (b) Show that

x−1=−x+B(x,x)+∣x∣2o(1) x^{-1} = -x + B(x, x) + |x|^2 o(1)
xyx−1=y+B(x,y)−B(y,x)+∣x∣∣y∣o(1) xyx^{-1} = y + B(x, y) - B(y, x) + |x||y| o(1)
x−1y−1xy=B(x,y)−B(y,x)+∣x∣∣y∣o(1) x^{-1}y^{-1}xy = B(x, y) - B(y, x) + |x||y| o(1)
as (x,y)(x, y) tends to (0,0)(0, 0).
