Exercise 17, § 6

Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, III, 387

(a) Let G,G‾,G0G, \overline{G}, G_0 be as in Exercise 16 (b). Let VV be a finite-dimensional complex vector space and ρ\rho an irreducible linear representation of G0G_0 on VV. Show that there exist finite-dimensional complex vector spaces X,YX, Y, an analytic irreducible linear representation σ\sigma (resp. τ\tau) of GG (resp. G‾\overline{G}) on XX (resp. YY) and an isomorphism of VV onto X⊗YX \otimes Y which transforms ρ\rho into σ⊗τ\sigma \otimes \tau. (Use Exercise 16 (a), Proposition 2 of Chapter I, § 2, and the Corollary to Proposition 8 of Algebra, Chapter VIII, § 7.)

(b) Show that the conclusion of (a) is not necessarily true if we omit the hypothesis that GG is simply connected. (Consider the complex Lie group C∗\mathbf{C}^*.)
