Let G be the universal covering of SL(2,R)\mathbf{SL}(2, \mathbf{R}), π\pi the canonical morphism of G onto SL(2,R)\mathbf{SL}(2, \mathbf{R}) and N its kernel. (a) Arguing as in Exercise 1, show that there exists an isomorphism of the real analytic manifold U×R2\mathbf{U} \times \mathbf{R}^2 onto the real analytic manifold SL(2,R)\mathbf{SL}(2, \mathbf{R}). Deduce that N is isomorphic to Z\mathbf{Z}.

(b) If ρ\rho is an analytic linear representation of GG on a complex vector space, then Ker ρ⊃N\mathrm{Ker}\,\rho \supset N. (The representation L(ρ)L(\rho) of sl(2,R)\mathfrak{sl}(2, \mathbf{R}) defines, by complexification, a representation of sl(2,C)\mathfrak{sl}(2, \mathbf{C}) and the latter is, by Exercise 1, of the form L(σ)L(\sigma), where σ\sigma is an analytic linear representation of SL(2,C)\mathbf{SL}(2, \mathbf{C}). Then L(σ∘π)=L(ρ)L(\sigma \circ \pi) = L(\rho) and hence σ∘π=ρ\sigma \circ \pi = \rho.)
