Let GG be a real Lie group and HH a normal 1-dimensional integral subgroup. (a) If HH is not closed, H‾\overline{H} is compact (Spectral Theories, Chapter II, § 2, Lemma 1), hence isomorphic to TnT^n and hence central in GG if GG is connected (use General Topology, Chapter VII, § 2, Proposition 5). (b) Suppose that HH is closed. Let aa be an element of GG and C(a)C(a) the set of elements of GG which commute with aa. Suppose that H⊄C(a)H \not\subset C(a). If HH is isomorphic to R\mathbf{R}, then C(a)∩H={e}C(a) \cap H = \{e\}. (Consider the automorphism α:h↦a−1ha\alpha : h \mapsto a^{-1}ha of HH.) If HH is isomorphic to T\mathbf{T}, C(a)∩HC(a) \cap H has two elements. (Consider α\alpha again and use General Topology, Chapter VII, § 2, Proposition 6.) The second situation is impossible if GG is connected (use (a)). (c) With the hypotheses of (b), suppose further that G/HG/H is commutative.

Then G=C(a).H.G = C(a).H. (Observe that the mapping h↦h−1α(h)h \mapsto h^{-1}\alpha(h) of HH into HH is surjective.)
