Exercise 22, § 6

Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, III, 389

Let GG be a real Lie group, HH a normal 1-dimensional integral subgroup and AA a closed subgroup of GG such that AHAH is not closed in GG. Then HH is central in the identity component of AH‾\overline{AH}. (Reduce it to the case where G=AH‾G = \overline{AH} and GG is connected. Then the set BB of elements of AA which commute with HH is a normal subgroup of GG. Passing to the quotient by BB, reduce it to the case B={e}B = \{e\}. As every commutator in GG commutes with HH, AA is then commutative. By assuming that HH is closed and using Exercise 21 (c), show that AHAH would be closed, whence a contradiction. Hence HH is not closed and Exercise 21 (a) can be used.)
