Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, III, 389

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let GG be a real Lie group and c=(U,ϕ,E)c = (U, \phi, E) a chart on the manifold GG centred on the identity element ee. If x∈Ux \in U, let ∣x∣c|x|_c denote the norm of ϕ(x)\phi(x) in the Banach space EE.

(a) Show that, if c′=(U′,ϕ′,E′)c' = (U', \phi', E') is another chart centred on ee, there exist constants λ>0\lambda > 0 and μ>0\mu > 0 such that

μ∣x∣c≤∣x∣c′≤λ∣x∣c \mu|x|_c \leq |x|_{c'} \leq \lambda|x|_c
for all x∈Gx \in G sufficiently close to ee.

(b) Show that, for all ρ>0\rho > 0, there exists a neighbourhood UρU_\rho of ee contained in UU such that, for x,yx, y in UρU_\rho, (x,y)∈Uρ(x, y) \in U_\rho and

∣(x,y)∣c≤ρinf⁡(∣x∣c,∣y∣c). |(x, y)|_c \leq \rho \inf(|x|_c, |y|_c).

(c) Suppose that GG is finite-dimensional. Let Γ\Gamma be a discrete subgroup of GG. Apply (b) with 0<ρ<10 < \rho < 1 and choose UρU_\rho to be relatively compact. The set Uρ∩ΓU_\rho \cap \Gamma is finite. Let

{e=γ0,γ1,…,γm} \{e = \gamma_0, \gamma_1, \ldots, \gamma_m\}
be its elements, numbered so that
∣γ0∣c≤∣γ1∣c≤⋯≤∣γm∣c. |\gamma_0|_c \leq |\gamma_1|_c \leq \cdots \leq |\gamma_m|_c.
Show that, if i≤mi \leq m and j≤mj \leq m, the commutator (γi,γj)(\gamma_i, \gamma_j) is equal to one of the γk\gamma_k with k<inf⁡(i,j)k < \inf(i, j). Deduce that the subgroup generated by Uρ∩ΓU_\rho \cap \Gamma is nilpotent of class ≤m\leq m.

Deduce from the above the existence of a neighbourhood VV of ee such that, for every discrete subgroup Γ\Gamma of GG, there exists a nilpotent integral subgroup NN of GG containing V∩ΓV \cap \Gamma.

(d) Suppose that GG is connected and finite-dimensional and contains an increasing sequence of discrete subgroups DnD_n whose union is dense in GG. Then GG is nilpotent. (Using (c), prove the existence of a central one-parameter subgroup HH which meets DnD_n for sufficiently large nn at a point distinct from ee. Argue by induction on dim⁡G\dim G, distinguishing two cases according to whether HH is closed or relatively compact (Exercise 21 (a)).)
