Exercise 3, § 6

Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, III, 384

Let G1G_1 be the simply connected nilpotent real Lie group defined in Exercise 5 of § 4. Let ZZ be the centre of G1G_1, NN a non-trivial discrete subgroup of ZZ and G=G1/NG = G_1/N. If ρ\rho is a finite-dimensional analytic linear representation of GG, ρ(Z/N)\rho(Z/N) is a semi-simple set of automorphisms, for Z/NZ/N is compact; but Z=(G,G)Z = (G, G) and hence ρ(Z/N)\rho(Z/N) is unipotent (Chapter I, § 6, Proposition 6). Therefore ρ\rho is trivial on Z/NZ/N.
