Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, III, 384

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let II be the interval [1,2][1, 2] with the discrete topology. Let EE be the complete normed space of functions f:I→Rf : I \to \mathbf{R} such that ∥f∥=∑i∈I∣f(i)∣<+∞\|f\| = \sum_{i \in I} |f(i)| < +\infty. For all x∈Ix \in I, let εx\varepsilon_x be the element of EE such that εx(t)=0\varepsilon_x(t) = 0 for t≠xt \neq x and εx(x)=1\varepsilon_x(x) = 1. Let PP be the subgroup of EE generated by the xεxx\varepsilon_x with x∈Ix \in I; it is a discrete subgroup of EE. Let GG be the Lie group E/PE/P. Let FF be the hyperplane of EE consisting of the f∈Ef \in E such that ∑i∈If(i)=0\sum_{i \in I} f(i) = 0. Let HH be the Lie group F/(F∩P)F/(F \cap P). Let ϕ\phi be the canonical morphism of HH into GG. Show that ϕ\phi is bijective and is an immersion but is not a Lie group isomorphism. (Let ff be a linear form on EE with kernel FF; show that f(P)=Rf(P) = \mathbf{R} and hence that F+P=EF + P = E.) Deduce that in Proposition 3 the countability hypothesis cannot be omitted.
