Exercise 14, § 9

Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, III, 399

(a) Let G=GL(n,C)G = \mathbf{GL}(n, \mathbf{C}). Show that exp⁡G\exp_G is surjective. (Use the holomorphic functional calculus of Spectral Theories, Chapter I, § 4, no. 8.)

(b) Let G′=SL(2,C)G' = \mathbf{SL}(2, \mathbf{C}). Show that, if σ∈C∗\sigma \in \mathbf{C}^*, the element (−1σ0−1)\begin{pmatrix} -1 & \sigma \\ 0 & -1 \end{pmatrix} of G′G' does not belong to the image of exp⁡G′\exp_{G'}.
