Let GG be a finite-dimensional connected real or complex Lie group and ρ\rho an analytic linear representation of GG on a finite-dimensional complex vector space VV. Suppose that ρ\rho is semi-simple. The group GG operates by automorphisms on the algebra S(V∗)S(V^*) of polynomial functions on VV. (a) Let S(V∗)GS(V^*)^G be the set of GG-invariant elements of S(V∗)S(V^*). There exists a projector pp of S(V∗)S(V^*) onto S(V∗)GS(V^*)^G which commutes with the operations of GG and which leaves stable every GG-stable vector subspace of S(V∗)S(V^*).

(b) Let I,JI, J be ideals of S(V∗)S(V^*) which are stable under GG. Let AA (resp. BB) be the set of zeros of II (resp. JJ) in VV. Suppose that A∩B=∅A \cap B = \varnothing. There then exists u∈Iu \in I such that uu is GG-invariant and that u=1u = 1 in BB. (By Commutative Algebra, Chapter 7, § 3, no. 3, Proposition 2, there exists v∈I,w∈Jv \in I, w \in J such that v+w=1v + w = 1 Let u=pvu = pv. Show that uu has the required properties.)
