Let GG be a compact subgroup of GL(n,R)\mathbf{GL}(n, \mathbf{R}). (a) Let A,BA, B be disjoint compact GG-invariant subsets of Rn\mathbf{R}^n. There exists a GG-invariant polynomial function uu on Rn\mathbf{R}^n, such that u=1u = 1 on AA and u=0u = 0 on BB. (There exists a continuous real-valued function vv on Rn\mathbf{R}^n such that v=1v = 1 on AA and v=0v = 0 on BB. By the Stone-Weierstrass Theorem, there exists a polynomial function ww on Rn\mathbf{R}^n such that ∣v−w∣≤13|v - w| \leq \frac{1}{3} on A∪BA \cup B. Derive uu by an integration process with respect to the normalized Haar measure of GG.) (b) Let x∈Rnx \in \mathbf{R}^n. Then GxGx is the set of zeros in Rn\mathbf{R}^n of a finite number of GG-invariant polynomials. (Use (a) and Corollary 2 to Theorem 1, no. 8.)
