Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let GG be a compact real Lie group and G′G' a finite-dimensional connected real Lie group. Suppose that L(G)L(G) is simple. Let ρ:G→G′\rho : G \to G' be a homomorphism of abstract groups. Suppose that there exists a neighbourhood VV of eGe_G in GG such that ρ(V)\rho(V) is relatively compact. Then ρ\rho is continuous. (Let V′V' be a neighbourhood of eG′e_{G'} in G′G'. Let V′′⊂V′V'' \subset V' be a neighbourhood of eG′e_{G'} such that

(x∈V′′,xj∈ρ(V),yj∈ρ(V) for 1≤j≤n)⇒(∏i=1nxi(yi,x)xi−1∈V′) (x \in V'', x_j \in \rho(V), y_j \in \rho(V) \text{ for } 1 \leq j \leq n) \Rightarrow \left( \prod_{i=1}^n x_i(y_i, x)x_i^{-1} \in V' \right)
where n=dim⁡Gn = \dim G. It can be assumed that ρ\rho is non-trivial. Then Ker ρ\mathrm{Ker}\, \rho is finite by Exercise 25. Therefore ρ(G)\rho(G) is not countable and hence not discrete. Hence there exists g∈Gg \in G with non-open centralizer such that ρ(g)∈V′′\rho(g) \in V''. Using Exercise 9 of § 4 and its notation, ρ(M(g,n,V))⊂V′\rho(M(g, n, V)) \subset V' and M(g,n,V)M(g, n, V) is a neighbourhood of eGe_G in GG.)
