Exercise 1, § 1

Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, IV

a) Let (W,S)(W, S) be a Coxeter system and let s1,…,srs_1, \ldots, s_r be elements of SS. Put w=s1…srw = s_1 \ldots s_r. Show that if lS(w)<rl_S(w) < r, there exist two integers pp and qq with 1≤p<q≤r1 \leq p < q \leq r such that w=s1…sp−1sp+1…sq−1sq+1…srw = s_1 \ldots s_{p-1} s_p + 1 \ldots s_{q-1} s_q + 1 \ldots s_r. Show that there is a strictly increasing sequence of integers j(1),…,j(k)j(1), \ldots, j(k) between 1 and rr such that (sj(1),…,sj(k))(s_{j(1)}, \ldots, s_{j(k)}) is a reduced decomposition of ww.

b) Let (W,S)(W, S) be a Coxeter system and X,Y,ZX, Y, Z three subsets of SS. Show that

WX∩(WY.WZ)=(WX∩WY).(WX∩WZ) W_X \cap (W_Y . W_Z) = (W_X \cap W_Y) . (W_X \cap W_Z)
(show that every element w∈WY.WZw \in W_Y . W_Z has a reduced decomposition
(s1,…,sh,t1,…,tk)(s_1, \ldots, s_h, t_1, \ldots, t_k)
such that si∈Ys_i \in Y and tj∈Zt_j \in Z and use Cor. 1 of Prop. 7 of no. 8). Show that
WX.(WY∩WZ)=(WX.WY)∩(WX.WZ). W_X . (W_Y \cap W_Z) = (W_X . W_Y) \cap (W_X . W_Z).
