Exercise 14, § 1

Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, IV

It is set in small type as supplementary.

Let (W,S)(W, S) be a Coxeter system and let (Γ,f)(\Gamma, f) be its Coxeter graph. Let kk be an integer ⩾3\geqslant 3. If aa is an edge of Γ\Gamma, put fk(a)=f(a)f_k(a) = f(a) if f(a)≠∞f(a) \neq \infty and fk(a)=kf_k(a) = k if f(a)=∞f(a) = \infty. Let (Wk,S)(W_k, S) be a Coxeter system whose Coxeter graph is equal to (Γ,fk)(\Gamma, f_k) (Chap. V, § 4, no. 3, Cor. of Prop. 4). Show that there exists a unique homomorphism φk\varphi_k from WW to WkW_k inducing the identity on SS. Show that if kk divides k′k', there exists a unique homomorphism φk,k′\varphi_{k,k'} from Wk′W_{k'} to WkW_k such that φk=φk,k′∘φk′\varphi_k = \varphi_{k,k'} \circ \varphi_{k'}. Show that the homomorphism (φk)(\varphi_k) from WW to the projective limit of the WkW_k is injective (use Exerc. 13) c)), but in general not surjective (for example, in the case of the infinite dihedral group).*
