Exercise 17, § 1

Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, IV

We retain the notation of Exerc. 16 and assume that WW is finite. Let H\mathfrak{H} be the set of walls of AA. To any H∈HH \in \mathfrak{H}, we associate the half H+H^+ of AA determined by HH containing CC. Show that the elements of H\mathfrak{H} can be numbered in such a way that the map j↦⋂i≤jHi+j \mapsto \bigcap_{i \leq j} H_i^+ is strictly decreasing on the interval [1,Card⁡(H)][1, \operatorname{Card}(\mathfrak{H})]. (Consider the family F\mathfrak{F} of intersections of the sets H+H^+ ordered by inclusion and consider a strictly decreasing sequence (F0,…,Fq)(F_0, \ldots, F_q) of elements of F\mathfrak{F} of maximal length. For any H∈HH \in \mathfrak{H}, there exists an ii such that H+⊃FjH^+ \supset F_j for j≥ij \geq i and H+⊅Fi−1H^+ \not\supset F_{i-1}: show that Fi=H+∩Fi−1F_i = H^+ \cap F_{i-1}.)
