Exercise 22, § 1

Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, IV

We retain the notation of Exerc. 16 and 21.

a) Let t∈Tt \in T and w∈Ww \in W. Show that the chambers CC and w(C)w(C) are separated by the wall LtL_t if and only if l(tw)<l(w)l(tw) < l(w) (use the folding determined by the half A+(t)A^+(t)).

b) Let w0∈Ww_0 \in W. Show that the following conditions are equivalent:

l(ww0)=l(w0)−l(w)for all w∈W;(i) l(ww_0) = l(w_0) - l(w) \quad \text{for all } w \in W; \tag{i}
l(tw0)<l(w0)for all t∈T;(ii) l(tw_0) < l(w_0) \quad \text{for all } t \in T; \tag{ii}
whenever t∈Tt \in T, the chambers CC and w0(C)w_0(C) are separated by the wall LtL_t (iii)

(Use Exerc. 16 h) to show that (iii) ⟹\Longrightarrow (i).) Show that such an element w0w_0 is unique and exists if and only if WW is finite. It is then the element of greatest length of WW and is characterized by

l(sw0)<l(w0)for all s∈S.(iv) l(sw_0) < l(w_0) \quad \text{for all } s \in S. \tag{iv}
Moreover, w02=1,w0Sw0=Sw_0^2 = 1, w_0Sw_0 = S and l(w0)=Card(T)l(w_0) = \mathrm{Card}(T).

(c) Assume that WW is finite. Show that, for any chamber C0C_0, there exists a unique chamber −C0-C_0 such that C0∪(−C0)C_0 \cup (-C_0) is not contained in any half of AA. Show that there exists a unique involutive automorphism φ\varphi of AA (not necessarily allowed such that φ(C0)=−C0\varphi(C_0) = -C_0 for any chamber C0C_0 and that φ(L)=L\varphi(L) = L for any wall LL of AA. We put φ(a)=−a\varphi(a) = -a for a∈Aa \in A. If FF is a facet, the facet −F=φ(F)-F = \varphi(F) will be said to be opposed to FF.

d) Let C0C_0 be a chamber of AA and FF a partition of C0C_0. Show that the convex hull of C0∪(−F)C_0 \cup (-F) is the half of AA determined by the wall LL that is the support of FF and that contains C0C_0.
