A structured building is a building II equipped with a set U\mathfrak{U} of sub-buildings satisfying the following conditions:

(SB 1) The sub-buildings A∈UA \in \mathfrak{U} are apartments.

(SB 2) Any two chambers of I are contained in at least one element of U\mathscr{U}. (SB 3) Whenever A1,A2∈UA_1, A_2 \in \mathscr{U} are such that A1∩A2A_1 \cap A_2 contains a chamber, there exists an isomorphism from A1A_1 to A2A_2 leaving fixed the points of A1∩A2A_1 \cap A_2.

Let (I,U)(I, \mathscr{U}) be a structured building. The elements of U\mathscr{U} are called the apartments of (I,U)(I, \mathscr{U}), or simply those of I.

a) Show that any two apartments of I are isomorphic. Let C be a chamber of I and A an apartment of I containing C. Show that there exists a unique endomorphism ρ\rho of I (called the retraction with centre C of I onto A) such that ρ(a)=a\rho(a) = a for all a∈Aa \in A and that, for any apartment A′A' containing C, the restriction of ρ\rho to A′A' is an isomorphism from A′A' to A (remark that, by (SB 2) and Exerc. 15 b), for any apartment A′A' containing C, there exists a unique isomorphism ρA′\rho_{A'} of A′A' leaving all the points of C fixed). Show that ρ2=ρ\rho^2 = \rho and that ρ−1(C)=C\rho^{-1}(C) = C.

b) Let A be an apartment of I, C0C_0 a chamber and F a facet contained in A. Let (C0,C1,…,Cn)(C_0, C_1, \ldots, C_n) be a gallery of smallest possible length such that F⊂CnF \subset C_n. Show that Ci⊂AC_i \subset A for 1≤i≤n1 \leq i \leq n (argue by contradiction: if Ci⊂AC_i \subset A and Ci+1∉AC_{i+1} \notin A, consider the retraction of I onto A with centre the chamber of A distinct from CiC_i and containing Ci∩Ci+1C_i \cap C_{i+1}).

c) Let A be an apartment of I, C a chamber of A, F a panel of C, C′C' a chamber of I and Γ=(C0,…,Cn=C′)\Gamma = (C_0, \ldots, C_n = C') a gallery of smallest possible length such that F⊂C0F \subset C_0. Show that the retraction ρ\rho of I onto A with centre C transforms Γ\Gamma into a gallery

(C0′,…,Cn′=ρ(C′)) (C'_0, \ldots, C'_n = \rho(C'))
of smallest possible length such that F⊂C0′F \subset C'_0 (consider an apartment A′A' containing C′C' and F and apply b) and the fact that the restriction of ρ\rho to A′A' is an isomorphism).

d) Let A be an apartment, C1C_1 and C2C_2 two distinct neighbouring chambers contained in A, C′C' a chamber containing C1∩C2C_1 \cap C_2 and distinct from C1C_1 and C2C_2, and Ai′A'_i an apartment containing CiC_i and C′C' (for i=1,2i = 1, 2). Let φi\varphi_i (resp. ψi\psi_i) be the retraction of I onto A (resp. Ai′A'_i) with centre CiC_i (resp. C′C') and let ρi\rho_i be the restriction of φi∘ψi\varphi_i \circ \psi_i to A. Let C be a chamber of A; show that if

d(C,C1)≤d(C,C2), d(C, C_1) \leq d(C, C_2),
then ρ1(a)=a\rho_1(a) = a for all a∈Ca \in C and d(C,C1)<d(C,C2)d(C, C_1) < d(C, C_2) (consider a minimal gallery Γ\Gamma with extremities C and C1C_1 and apply c) to show that ρ1(Γ)\rho_1(\Gamma) is minimal; then use Exerc. 15 b)). Show that, if d(C,C2)<d(C,C1)d(C, C_2) < d(C, C_1), then ρ1(C)≠C\rho_1(C) \neq C and ρ12(C)=ρ1(C)\rho_1^2(C) = \rho_1(C) (take a minimal gallery Γ\Gamma with extremities C and C2C_2 and use c) to show that ρ1(Γ)\rho_1(\Gamma) is a gallery of smallest possible length having one extremity equal to ρ1(C)\rho_1(C) and the other containing C1∩C2C_1 \cap C_2; deduce that d(C1,ρ1(C1))≤d(C2,ρ1(C1))d(C_1, \rho_1(C_1)) \leq d(C_2, \rho_1(C_1))).

Show that ρi\rho_i is a folding (Exerc. 19) of AA (show that A=ρ1(A)∪ρ2(A)A = \rho_1(A) \cup \rho_2(A)) and define an involutive automorphism σ\sigma of AA by putting σ(a)=ρ2(a)\sigma(a) = \rho_2(a) if a∈ρ1(A)a \in \rho_1(A) and σ(a)=ρ1(a)\sigma(a) = \rho_1(a) if a∈ρ2(A)a \in \rho_2(A); show that if CC is a chamber contained in ρ1(A)\rho_1(A), then ρ1−1(C)={C,ρ2(C)}\rho_1^{-1}(C) = \{ C, \rho_2(C) \}.

e) Let II be a spacious structured building, that is to say that every panel is contained in at least three chambers. Show that there exists a Coxeter system (W,S)(W, S), unique up to isomorphism, such that the apartments of II are isomorphic to the apartment A0A_0 associated to (W,S)(W, S) (use dd and Exerc. 19)). Let AA be an apartment of II and φ\varphi an isomorphism from A0A_0 to AA. Show that there exists a unique numbering of II, with values in SS, such that the types of aa and φ(a)\varphi(a) are equal for all a∈A0a \in A_0 (choose a chamber CC of AA and show, by using bb), that, if A′A' and A′′A'' are two apartments of II containing CC, the numberings of A′A' and A′′A'' extending that determined on CC coincide on A′∩A′′A' \cap A''.

We shall say that the Coxeter system (W,S)(W, S) and the numbering thus obtained are adapted to II.

Show that the retractions introduced in a) are allowed endomorphisms. Show that a subset of II contained in an apartment AA of II is convex in II if and only if it is convex in AA (Exerc. 20).

f) We retain the notation of e) and let U\mathscr{U} be the set of allowed isomorphisms from A0A_0 to the various apartments of II. Show that, if φ,ψ∈U\varphi, \psi \in \mathscr{U} and if CC is a chamber and FF a facet of II contained in φ(A0)∩ψ(A0)\varphi(A_0) \cap \psi(A_0), there exists an element w∈Ww \in W such that ψ−1(C)=wφ−1(C)\psi^{-1}(C) = w \varphi^{-1}(C) and ψ−1(F)=wφ−1(F)\psi^{-1}(F) = w \varphi^{-1}(F) (consider an isomorphism λ\lambda from φ(A0)\varphi(A_0) to ψ(A0)\psi(A_0) leaving fixed the points of φ(A0)∩ψ(A0)\varphi(A_0) \cap \psi(A_0) and apply Exerc. 21 b) to the automorphism ψ−1∘λ∘φ−1\psi^{-1} \circ \lambda \circ \varphi^{-1} of A0A_0.
