Exercise 3, § 1

Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, IV

Let (W,S)(W, S) be a Coxeter system and X,YX, Y two subsets of SS. Let a∈Wa \in W. Show that there exists a unique element w∈WXaWYw \in W_X a W_Y of minimal length and that every element

w′∈WXaWY w' \in W_X a W_Y
can be written in the form w′=xwyw' = x w y, with x∈WX,y∈WYx \in W_X, y \in W_Y and l(w′)=l(x)+l(w)+l(y)l(w') = l(x) + l(w) + l(y) (take an element of minimal length in WXaWYW_X a W_Y and use Exerc. 1). An element w∈Ww \in W is said to be (X,Y)(X, Y)-reduced if it is the element of minimal length in the double coset WXaWYW_X a W_Y. Show that if ww is (X,∅)(X, \varnothing)-reduced then l(xw)=l(x)+l(w)l(x w) = l(x) + l(w) for all x∈WXx \in W_X, and that every element of WW can be written uniquely in the form xwx w where x∈WXx \in W_X and ww is (X,∅)(X, \varnothing)-reduced. Show that an element w∈Ww \in W is (X,∅)(X, \varnothing)-reduced if and only if l(xw)>l(w)l(xw) > l(w) for all x∈Xx \in X (write ww in the form yw′yw', where y∈WXy \in W_X and w′w' is (X,∅)(X, \varnothing)-reduced).

Show that w∈Ww \in W is (X,Y)(X, Y)-reduced if and only if ww is both (X,∅)(X, \varnothing)-reduced and (∅,Y)(\varnothing, Y)-reduced.
