Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, IV

Let XX be a non-empty set and WW a set of permutations of XX. Assume given a set R\mathscr{R} of equivalence relations on XX, an element x0∈Xx_0 \in X and a map φ:H↦sH\varphi : H \mapsto s_H from R\mathscr{R} to WW. Denote by R0\mathscr{R}_0 the set of H∈RH \in \mathscr{R} such that sH(x0)≡x0mod  .H′s_H(x_0) \equiv x_0 \mod. H' for all H′≠HH' \neq H in R\mathscr{R}, and by S0S_0 the set of sHs_H for HH in R0\mathscr{R}_0. We make the following assumptions:

(i) For any H∈RH \in \mathscr{R}, there are two equivalence classes modulo HH that are permuted by sHs_H and sH2=1s_H^2 = 1.

(ii) For all H∈RH \in \mathscr{R} and all w∈Ww \in W, the transform w(H)w(H) of HH by ww is an equivalence relation belonging to R\mathscr{R} and sw(H)=wsHw−1s_{w(H)} = ws_Hw^{-1}.

(iii) For any w≠1w \neq 1 in WW, the set of H∈RH \in \mathscr{R} such that w(x0)≢x0mod  .Hw(x_0) \not\equiv x_0 \mod. H is finite and meets R0\mathscr{R}_0.

a) Prove that (W,S0)(W, S_0) is a Coxeter system (use Prop. 6 of no. 7).

b) Prove that the length lS0(w)l_{S_0}(w) is equal to the number of elements H∈RH \in \mathscr{R} such that

w(x0)≢x0mod  .H. w(x_0) \not\equiv x_0 \mod. H.

c) Let EE be a finite set and XX the set of total order relations on XX. Denote by WW the group of permutations of EE, acting in the obvious way on EE. Let ii and jj be distinct elements of EE; say that two elements RR and R′R' of XX are equivalent mod. HijH_{ij} if either R(i,j)R(i, j) and R′(i,j)R'(i, j) or R(j,i)R(j, i) and R′(j,i)R'(j, i); and denote the transposition of ii and jj by sijs_{ij}. Let R\mathscr{R} be the set of equivalence relations of the form HijH_{ij} and φ\varphi the map from R\mathscr{R} to WW defined by φ(Hij)=sij\varphi(H_{ij}) = s_{ij}; finally let x0x_0 be an arbitrary element of XX. Show that the objects thus defined satisfy assumptions (i) to (iii), and recover the results of Exerc. 4.
