Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

We retain the notations of the preceding exercise; assume further that the subgroup H is clean (Exerc. 15).

a) Show that R(G,T)R(G,T) is contained in the subgroup of X(T) generated by the union of the R(λ)R(\lambda ) for λ∈BH\lambda \in B_H.

b) Let Δ\Delta be the identity component of the subgroup of S consisting of the s∈Ss\in S such that λ(s)=μ(s)\lambda (s) =\mu(s) for all λ,μ\lambda , \mu in BHB_H. Show that there exists a basis {α1,...,αl}\{\alpha_1, . . . , \alpha_l\} of R(G,T)R(G,T) and an integer kk, with 0≤k≤l−10\leq k\leq l-1, such that Δ\Delta is the identity component of the set of t∈Tt\in T satisfying

α1(t)=⋯=αk(t)=1,αk+1(t)=⋯=αl(t) \alpha_1(t) =\cdots =\alpha_k(t) = 1, \alpha_{k+1}(t) =\cdots =\alpha_l(t)

(Let xx be the element of L(S) such that δ(λ)(x)=2πi\delta (\lambda )(x) = 2\pi i for all λ∈BH\lambda \in B_H; deduce from aa) that exp x∈C(G)x\in C(G). Choose {α1,...,αl}\{\alpha_1, . . . , \alpha_l\} so that iδ(αj)(x)i\delta (\alpha_j)(x) is zero for 1≤j≤k1\leq j\leq k and <0<0 for k+1≤j≤lk+ 1\leq j\leq l; then show that for all λ∈BH\lambda \in B_H every root in R(λ)R(\lambda ) can be written

αj+n1α1+⋯+nkαk \alpha_j+n_1\alpha_1+\cdots +n_k\alpha_k

with j≥k+1j\geq k+ 1 and ni∈Nn_i\in \mathbf{N}. Conclude by using a).)a).)

c) Show that the integer kk does not depend on the choice of the tori S,TS,T or of the bases BH,{α1,...,αl}B_H,\{\alpha_1, . . . , \alpha_l\}; it is equal to the rank of the derived group of ZG(Δ)Z_G(\Delta ).
