Let K be a commutative ring with unit element, let E be an A-module, and let E∗E^* be its dual. Denote by φ\varphi the canonical homomorphism from E⊗E∗E \otimes E^* to End(E)\mathrm{End}(E).

a) Any element distinct from 1 in End(E)\mathrm{End}(E) of the form

sx,y∗=1−φ(x⊗y∗), s_{x, y^*} = 1 - \varphi(x \otimes y^*),

with x∈Ex \in E and y∗∈E∗y^* \in E^*, is called a pseudo-reflection in E. Such an element s is called a reflection if xx and y∗y^* can be chosen so that ⟨x,y∗⟩=2\langle x, y^* \rangle = 2; show that we then have s2=1s^2 = 1 and s(x)=−xs(x) = -x.

b) Let x∈E, y∗∈E∗x \in E, \ y^* \in E^* be such that ⟨x,y∗⟩=1\langle x, y^* \rangle = 1. Show that E is the direct sum of the submodule KxKx generated by xx and the orthogonal complement H of y∗y^*. Show that KxKx is free with basis xx, and that s=s2x,y∗s = s_{2x, y^*} is equal to 1 on H and to −1-1 on KxKx.
