Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, V

a) Let K be a commutative field, V a vector space of finite dimension n over K, φ\varphi a symmetric bilinear form on V, and N the kernel of φ\varphi. Assume that dim⁡N=1\dim N = 1. Show that the kernel of the extension of φ\varphi to ⋀n−1V\bigwedge^{n-1} V is of dimension n−1n-1.

b) Assume in addition that K=RK = \mathbf{R} and that φ\varphi is positive. Let (e1,…,en)(e_1, \ldots, e_n) be a basis of V, and aij=φ(ei,ej)a_{ij} = \varphi(e_i, e_j). Assume that aij≤0a_{ij} \leq 0 for i≠ji \neq j. Assume that there is no partition I∪JI \cup J of {1,2,…,n}\{1, 2, \ldots, n\} such that aij=0a_{ij} = 0 for i∈I,j∈Ji \in I, j \in J. Let AijA_{ij} be the cofactor of aija_{ij} in the matrix (aij)(a_{ij}). Show that Aij>0A_{ij} > 0 for all ii and jj. (Let ζ1e1+⋯+ζnen\zeta_1 e_1 + \cdots + \zeta_n e_n be a vector generating N, all of whose coordinates are >0> 0. Show that every row and column of (Aij)(A_{ij}) is proportional to (ζ1,…,ζn)(\zeta_1, \ldots, \zeta_n).

Deduce that Aij=μζiζjA_{ij} = \mu \zeta_i \zeta_j for some constant μ\mu. By considering the AiiA_{ii}, show that μ>0\mu > 0.

c) Show that ζ1,…,ζn\zeta_1, \ldots, \zeta_n are proportional to A11,…,Ann\sqrt{A_{11}}, \ldots, \sqrt{A_{nn}}.
