Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, V

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Show that (W,S)(W,S) is of hyperbolic type (cf. Exerc. 12) if and only if the following two conditions are satisfied: (H₁) The form BMB_M is not positive. (H₂) For any subset TT of SS distinct from SS, the form BM(T)B_{M(T)} associated to the Coxeter system (WT,T)(W_T, T) is positive.

(If (W,S)(W,S) is of hyperbolic type, we have seen that es∗.es∗≤0e_s^*.e_s^* \leq 0 for all s∈Ss \in S, the notation being that of Exerc. 12. The restriction of BMB_M to the hyperplane E(s)E(s) orthogonal to es∗e_s^* is thus ≥0\geq 0; since E(s)E(s) is generated by the ete_t for t≠st \neq s, (H₂) follows. Conversely, assume that (H₁) and (H₂) are satisfied; let x=∑sasesx = \sum_s a_s e_s be an element of EE such that x.x<0x.x < 0; let x+x_+ (resp. x−x_-) be the sum of the asesa_s e_s for which asa_s is >0> 0 (resp. ≤0\leq 0); show that either x+.x+<0x_+.x_+ < 0 or x−.x−<0x_-.x_- < 0. If VV denotes the open simplicial cone generated by the ese_s, and HH the set of x∈Ex \in E such that x.x<0x.x < 0, deduce that there exists a connected component H0H_0 of HH that meets VV; by using (H₂), show that H0H_0 does not meet the walls of VV, so H0⊂VH_0 \subset V. Deduce that the form BM(x,y)=x.yB_M(x,y) = x.y is non-degenerate of signature (n−1,1)(n-1,1), and that CC is contained in −H0-H_0, hence the fact that (W,S)(W,S) is of hyperbolic type.)
