Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, V

a) Let Γw\Gamma_w be the set of extremal generators of the cone w(C)w(C) and let AA be the union of the Γw\Gamma_w for w∈Ww \in W. Show that AA, equipped with the set {Γw∣w∈W}\{\Gamma_w | w \in W\}, is a building (Chap. IV, § 1, Exerc. 15). Show that the map jj from the apartment A0A_0 associated to the Coxeter system (W,S)(W, S) (Chap. IV, § 1, Exerc. 16) to AA that transforms the point wW(s)wW^{(s)} of A0A_0 (for w∈Ww \in W and s∈Ss \in S) to the generator w(Res)w(\mathbf{Re}_s), is an isomorphism from A0A_0 to AA, compatible with the action of WW. Show that, if t=wsw−1t = wsw^{-1}, with w∈Ww \in W and s∈Ss \in S, the image under jj of the wall LtL_t defined by tt (resp. of a half of A0A_0 defined by LtL_t) (\emph{loc. cit.}) is the set of elements of AA contained in the hyperplane (resp. the closed half-space) that is the transform by σ∗(w)\sigma^*(w) of the hyperplane es=0e_s = 0 (resp. of one of the closed half-spaces es≥0e_s \geq 0 or es≤0e_s \leq 0).

b) Show that WW is finite if and only if there exists an element w0∈Ww_0 \in W such that w0(C)=−Cw_0(C) = -C. This element w0w_0 is then unique and is the longest element of WW (use Exerc. 22 of Chap. IV, § 1). Show that in that case j(−a)=−j(a)j(-a) = -j(a) for all a∈A0a \in A_0 (cf. Exerc. 22 c) of Chap. IV, § 1).

c) Show that WW is finite if and only if the cone UU formed by taking the union of the cone closures w(C‾)w(\overline{C}) for w∈Ww \in W is equal to the whole of E∗E^* (if WW is finite, use b) and the convexity of UU. If U=E∗U = E^*, consider an element w∈Ww \in W such that w(C‾)∩(−C)≠∅w(\overline{C}) \cap (-C) \neq \varnothing and show that w(C)=−Cw(C) = -C.

d) Let HH be a finite subgroup of WW. Show that there exists a subset XX of SS such that WXW_X is finite and contains a conjugate of HH. (Argue by induction on Card(S)\mathrm{Card}(S). Let x∈Cx \in C and x‾=∑h∈Hh(x)\overline{x} = \sum_{h \in H} h(x). Show, by using c) above, that WW is finite if x‾=0\overline{x} = 0. If x‾≠0\overline{x} \neq 0, there exist w∈Ww \in W and Y⊂S,Y≠SY \subset S, Y \neq S, such that w(x‾)w(\overline{x}) belongs to CYC_Y (in the notation of no. 6), and hence H⊂w−1WYwH \subset w^{-1}W_Yw; apply the induction hypothesis to YY.)
