Exercise 1, § 1

Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, VI

Let R be a root system, R=R1∪R2R = R_1 \cup R_2 a partition of R. Assume that, if x,yx, y are two elements of RiR_i and if x+yx + y (resp. x−yx - y) is a root, then x+y∈Rix + y \in R_i (resp. x−y∈Rix - y \in R_i), where i=1,2i = 1, 2. Then, R is the direct sum of R1R_1 and R2R_2. (By using the Cor. of Th. 1, no. 3, show that if x∈R1x \in R_1 and y∈R2y \in R_2 then (x∣y)=0.(x|y) = 0.)
