Exercise 21, § 1

Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, VI

Let RR be a root system and BB a basis of RR. Let α,β∈B\alpha, \beta \in B and w∈W(R)w \in W(R) be such that β=w(α)\beta = w(\alpha). Show that there exists a sequence α1,…,αn\alpha_1, \ldots, \alpha_n of elements of RR and a sequence w1,…,wn−1w_1, \ldots, w_{n-1} of elements of W(R)W(R) such that

(i) α1=α,αn=β\alpha_1 = \alpha, \quad \alpha_n = \beta.

(ii) w=wn−1…w1w = w_{n-1} \ldots w_1.

(iii) wi(αi)=αi+1w_i(\alpha_i) = \alpha_{i+1} for 1≤i≤n−11 \leq i \leq n-1.

(iv) For all i∈{1,n−1}i \in \{1, n-1\}, there exist βi∈B\beta_i \in B such that wiw_i belongs to the subgroup of W(R)W(R) generated by the reflections sαis_{\alpha_i} and sβis_{\beta_i}.
