Exercise 22, § 1

Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, VI

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

With the assumptions and notations of Prop. 33 of no. 11, denote by ω1,…,ωl\omega_1, \ldots, \omega_l the fundamental weights of RR.

a) Show that c−1(ωi)=ωi−θic^{-1}(\omega_i) = \omega_i - \theta_i. Deduce that 1−c1-c maps P(R)P(R) to Q(R)Q(R).

b) Let ff be the connection index of RR, and let m1,…,mlm_1, \ldots, m_l be the exponents of W(R)W(R). Show that

f=det⁡(1−c)=∏j=1l(1−wmj)=2l∏j=1lsin⁡(mjπ/h) f = \det(1-c) = \prod_{j=1}^l (1 - w^{m_j}) = 2^l \prod_{j=1}^l \sin(m_j \pi / h)

with w=e2πi/hw = e^{2 \pi i / h}.

c) Let pp be a prime number. Write hh in the form h=pnHh = p^n H, with HH not divisible by pp. Show that pp divides ff if and only if HH divides one of the mjm_j.²
