Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, VI

Let RR be a reduced root system, and let XX be a subset of P(R)P(R). Say that XX is saturated if the following condition is satisfied:

(S) For all p∈X,α∈Rp \in X, \alpha \in R and i∈Zi \in \mathbf{Z} such that ii is between 0 and ⟨p,α∨⟩\langle p, \alpha^\vee \rangle, p−iα∈Xp - i \alpha \in X.

a) Show that every saturated subset is stable under the Weyl group WW of RR.

b) Show that, for any subset AA of P(R)P(R), there exists a smallest saturated subset S(A)S(A) of P(R)P(R) containing AA.

c) Let CC be a chamber of RR, and let p∈P(R)∩C‾p \in P(R) \cap \overline{C} be a dominant weight. Let S(p)S(p) be the smallest saturated subset of P(R)P(R) containing pp. Let Σ(p)\Sigma(p) be the set of elements p′∈P(R)p' \in P(R) such that

(i) p≡p′mod  Q(R)p \equiv p' \mod Q(R).

(ii) For all w∈Ww \in W, w(p′)≤ww(p') \leq w (with respect to the order relation defined by CC).

Show that Σ(p)\Sigma(p) is finite, contains pp, and is saturated. Conclude that S(p)S(p) is contained in Σ(p)\Sigma(p).

d) Show that, if α\alpha is a longest element of RR, S(α)=R∪{0}S(\alpha) = R \cup \{0\}.
