Let Γ\Gamma be a free Z\mathbf{Z}-module of finite rank l, Γ∗\Gamma^* the dual Z\mathbf{Z}-module, I a finite set of indices, (xi,xi∗)i∈I(x_i, x_i^*)_{i \in I} a family of elements of Γ×Γ∗\Gamma \times \Gamma^* such that ⟨xi,xi∗⟩=2\langle x_i, x_i^* \rangle = 2 for all i∈Ii \in I, si=sxi,xi∗s_i = s_{x_i, x_i^*}. Let V be the real vector space Γ⊗ZR\Gamma \otimes_{\mathbf{Z}} \mathbf{R}, whose dual V∗V^* can be identified with Γ∗⊗ZR\Gamma^* \otimes_{\mathbf{Z}} \mathbf{R}. We also denote by sis_i the reflection si⊗1s_i \otimes 1 in V. Let R (resp. R′R') be the set of xix_i (resp. xi∗x_i^*). Let E (resp. E′E') be the subspace of V (resp. V∗V^*) generated by R (resp. R′R'). Assume that si(R)=Rs_i(R) = R for all i. Then, R is a root system in E. E′E' is canonically identified with the dual of E and xi∗x_i^* with xi−x_i^- for all i. If F (resp. F′F') is the subspace of V (resp. V∗V^*) consisting of the points invariant under all the sis_i (resp. tsi{}^t s_i), then Γ∩F\Gamma \cap F (resp. Γ∗∩F′\Gamma^* \cap F') generates F (resp. F′F'). If we put Γ1=(Γ∩E)⊕(Γ∩F)\Gamma_1 = (\Gamma \cap E) \oplus (\Gamma \cap F) (resp. Γ1∗=(Γ∗∩E′)⊕(Γ∗∩F′)\Gamma_1^* = (\Gamma^* \cap E') \oplus (\Gamma^* \cap F')), then Γ/Γ1\Gamma / \Gamma_1 and Γ∗/Γ1∗\Gamma^* / \Gamma_1^* are isomorphic finite groups.
