Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, VI

a) Let AA be an abelian group of finite type, and TT a finite subset of AA not containing 0. There exists a subgroup HH of AA of finite index such that H∩T=∅H \cap T = \varnothing. (Let t∈Tt \in T. By using the structure of abelian groups of finite type, construct a subgroup of AA of finite index that does not contain tt. Now proceed by induction on Card(T)\mathrm{Card}(T).)

b) Let RR be a root system and PP a closed symmetric subset of RR. There exists a subgroup HH of Q(R)Q(R) of finite index such that P=H∩RP = H \cap R. (Pass to the quotient by the subgroup of Q(R)Q(R) generated by PP, and use a) and Prop. 23.)
