Exercise 8, § 1

Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, VI

Let RR be a reduced root system, CC a chamber, 2σ2\sigma the sum of the positive elements of R−R^-, P′(R)P'(R) the set of x∈P(R)x \in P(R) such that ⟨x,σ⟩∈Z\langle x, \sigma \rangle \in \mathbf{Z}. Then, Q(R)⊆P′(R)⊆P(R)Q(R) \subseteq P'(R) \subseteq P(R), and P(R)/P′(R)P(R)/P'(R) is of order 1 or 2. Let (β1,…,βl)(\beta_1, \ldots, \beta_l) be the basis of R−R^- corresponding to CC, and put 2σ=n1β1+⋯+nlβl2\sigma = n_1 \beta_1 + \cdots + n_l \beta_l where the nin_i are integers >0> 0. Then, P(R)=P′(R)P(R) = P'(R) if and only if all the nin_i are even.
