Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, VII, 55

Let h\mathfrak{h} be a nilpotent Lie algebra, V an h\mathfrak{h}-module not reduced to 0, and λ\lambda a function on h\mathfrak{h} such that V=Vλ(h)V = V^{\lambda}(\mathfrak{h}). Prove the equivalence of the following properties:

(i) λ\lambda is a linear form on h\mathfrak{h}, zero on [h,h][\mathfrak{h},\mathfrak{h}].

(ii) There exists a basis of V with respect to which the endomorphisms defined by the elements of h\mathfrak{h} are triangular.

(To prove that (i) =⇒=\Rightarrow (ii), apply Engel’s theorem to the h\mathfrak{h}-module L(Wλ,V)\mathscr{L}(W_{\lambda},V), where W is the 1-dimensional h\mathfrak{h}-module defined by λ.\lambda .)

Properties (i) and (ii) are true if kk is of characteristic 0 (Prop. 9).
